On this the eve of Vegan month (Friday, January 31) I did some quiet reflection and appreciation of the freedom of diet and choice I have as a non-vegan non-vegetarian without allergies. I can order anything on the menu at a restaurant. I can choose between sweet and sour chicken or chop suey, if I so desire. The field of options is not minimized by any dietary limitations, and for that, I am thankful. Part of this experiment is stepping into the shoes of people who do have limitations. This is less to realize how much I miss the normal food and choices that comprise my everyday diet and more to explore the world of creative meals and food open to vegans.
However, I figured my last meal without restrictions should appreciate the foods I will go without during this next month.
I had a blueberry muffin from Au Bon Pain, General Tsao's chicken with broccoli, and some stir fry vegetables. As I slurped up the crunchy chicken lumps and could feel the goopy sauce clogging my arteries, I looked forward to this month as a healthy sort of cleanse. Of course, there are many foods that are vegan and very unhealthy, but I hope the combination of the meal plan guidelines and a fridge full of fruits and veggies will transform my diet.
In a sort of last hurrah, I finished the night off with Freihofer's finest. I would be lying if I said I didn't have two or three or seven, but I figured, as with most mistakes, there's always tomorrow to make up for it.
